Q: Garage Door?
Garage Door ?
The boss walked into the office one morning not knowing his zipper was down
and his fly was wide open. His executive secretary walked up to him and said
"This morning when you left your house, did you close your garage door?"
The boss told her he knew he'd closed the garage door, and walked into his
office puzzled by the question. As he finished his paperwork, he suddenly
noticed his fly was open, and zipped it up. He then understood his assistants
question about the "garage door". He headed out for a cup of coffee and paused
by the desk to ask, "When my garage door was open, did you see my Hummer parked
there?" She smiled and said, "No I didn't. All I saw was an old mini van with
two flat tires."
A: Holy moly... that was fuken hilarious! Oh my god, I'm still laughing!!!
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! I JUST CAN'T STOP LAUGHING!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Q: Can 1/2hp garage door openers open a 2 car garage door without spring?
Can 1/2hp garage door openers open a 2 car garage door without spring? One side of the wire on my garage door broke, right now the door is crooked. If I cut the remain wire, the door will not be sprung, will the garage door opener still have enough power to open it? This is just temp solution until I can get it fixed, but I need to know before I cut. Thanks.
What I had to do last night was, I losened the bolt that was holding the wheel that was winding the wire, it released the spring's energy, then I just manually opened the door with a buddy. I'm going to hire a professional to fix it and wind it back to the proper tension though.
A: NO! Don't cut the remaining wire!. If you have individual side springs you have a fair chance of raising the door by giving it some manual lift assistance on the broken side. BUT- if your spring is a torsion rod that mounts horizontally on the wall right above the door I would have to advise you to please not attempt any action yourself, but contact an overhead door serviceman. Those torsion bar springs are LOADED with energy waiting to be released from the counter-wound springs and can be extremely dangerous when out of balance or suddenly released. With one half of the spring gone, this places abnormal overload on the remaining half, and without wanting to seem alarmist this does greatly raise the odds any jolting/erratic motion will be just enough to cause the overloaded half to suddenly break. These springs actually are only considered to have a normal life span of around 5-7 years, even though many pass that, but when one side fails it should be held as an indication the other half is also ready to go. If you've got the single torsion bar, please, don't risk it.
Q: How come the garage door is not opening and closing?
There is a lever that actually pulls and open the garage door when you press your garage-door button. Then there is a short metal bar along the chain (long) from the motor (box) and the garage door which grips the metal bar so it opens and closes the garage. This short metal bar runs when the garage door button is pressed along the chain, but it is not gripping as it should hence, the door is not opening and closing. Anyone has solution how to fix this ? I would appreciate the correct suggestion. Thank you.
A: Maybe you can find some help here...

Q: How to install Garage door opener with Main Beam in the way?
I want to install a garage door opener, but in the garage the main beam is in the way. It is a high ranch with a 2 car garage and the beam crosses through the middle of the garage parallel to the garage doors (supported by a pole in the middle of the garage between the cars. To install a ceiling mount garage door opener, I would have to cut a large hole or notch in the beam for the rail to pass through.
Is that OK? What are the alternatives?
A: You may want to look into side mount chain driven openers, more commonly found on commercial overhead doors
hope this helps . .
Q: How much do garage door openers cost and are they hard to install?
I am moving into a house with a two car garage, but the doors are manual. I plan to use my kids as garage door openers for a while, but on average how much do they cost to buy and install?
A: They are easy to install and when you are finished they will pass the test in perfect order, but when you are coming home and it is raining like democrats and republicans, it will get stuck half way up and half way down. Now, how bad the situation is depends on your attitude and your level of daily guilt. So, you will immediately know how much money you saved by not paying for the installation of the product. Act accordingly!
Q: How much does it cost to install a garage door and opener?
I am buying a house that has a "drive-in" garage in the basement. The garage door is in place, but they removed the track and caulked the edges of the door to permanently attach the door to the wall. I will need a new door with new tracks I am assuming. Also, the ceiling is low, so I would need to get the garage door opener to have the low ceiling option. I am in the St Louis MO area.
A: My husband runs a garage door business, hopefully the door could be saved. It might be wise to post an ad up on craigslist for someone with experince who might want to moonlight. They would tell you if the door could be saved and remove it safely. The low headroom can cause some issues (my husband is the only one at his work that will do these because they can be more tricky). The track is different and has to be installed different with lowheadroom.
If you just need tracks, and an opener and someone to moonlight to help install the cost should be $350ish (my husband company is in the midwest so I doubt the rates are much different).
If you need a new door should run about $400(assuming it is a standard 2 car garge door, white 4-5 panel door), opener $200 labor $100-125 (again with a moonlighter).
If you do it yourself please be careful with the springs!
Q: Is a second door required if you have an interior garage entrance?
I live in Quebec. Our foyer has a door to the garage (steel, sealed, auto-closing), and also another interior door to the rest of the home. I other words, there is a door between the interior garage door and the rest of the house. I want to remove this door to open up the foyer.
Does anybody know if this second door is required by code? I don't think it is, provided that the interior door accessing the garage is to code, but it would be nice to know for sure. I can't find the relevant code information online. I will probably end up calling a code official but thought I'd try here anyway!
A: As long as the garage door is auto-closing and sealing, there shouldn't be a problem.
We have an interior door (auto-close, sealing) to our garage that is located adjacent to 2 bedrooms in a hallway. That isn't a problem.
Now the disclaimer: you should still call the building code guys at "city hall", anyway, to make sure.

Q: my Hormann garage door is stuck closed and I need to get my car out?
The electric motor on my garage door has stopped working, the door is stuck in closed position. I have electricity supply and the remote controller is functioning. Is there any way to open the door or will I need to break the door or knock some of the wall down? HELP!
there is a manual way to disengage the chain - from the inside - unfortunatly I'm stuck outside.
A: You're stuffed unless you paid the extra for "external emergency release" by the look of it.
Try turning power off & on to reset, but that's about it.
Q: How to buy and program a remote garage door opener?
Wife lost her garage door opener but I still have mine. Can I buy one at a place like Home Depot and program it easily? Also, this is not for a house garage, it is for a condo complex that has a garage so I probably do not have access to a "unit" or whatever it is called; just my garage door opener.
Thanks!
A: It depends upon the particular model.
You may be able to purchase one identical to yours. Open both up and match the dip switches of the new one to the one you still have.
Take your remote with you when you go shopping.
Q: Garage Door...How to fix the door when it goes up and down when you try to use the remote?
Garage door is now being used manually. The problem was the garage door was going up and down when you tried to use the remote. I sprayed it with WD40 and wanted to know when you pull the rope to activate it manually, si there anything I need to do to use it with the remote? Or does by opening it manually put it back on track....thanks!
A: try a new battery in remote
Q: How to paint a chipping garage door quickly and easily?
Were are in the middle of closing a loan on a home we are buying and the garage door has to be free of chipped paint before the inspector sees it. Any body know a quick and easy way to strip the paint chips and to paint a wood paneled garage door?
Do I need to prime IT?
A: Sand down the door, feather the edges, then paint or stain it. It will only take a few hours.
Q: How do I install a garage door opener to an old garage door that is one solid door (not sectional)?
I just bought a house with an older garage. The garage door is one solid door that raise up and into the garage. The only track system is on the top to guide the door into the garage. Door is attached to a spring for easier opening and closing and has 2 pivot points I think.
My main question is: "Is it possible to put a garage door opener on a door like this?"
Secondly, "How do I install said garage door opener?"
A: I also bought an old house that has the solid garage door. I was able to have a garage door opener installed. They put a track system on the sides & 1 overhead so it slides up & down w/ ease. My father-in-law just had 1 installed & his was over 50 years old. We left it to the professionals, the cost out wayed the headaches of doing it ourselves.
Q: Can my garage door opener be fixed or does it need replacement?
I have a Craftsman garage door opener (model 139.53637SRT - 1/2 HP) that stopped working. It sounds like the motor runs, but the chain and trolley do not move at all, even if I pull the emergency release handle and disconnect the door from the trolley. I'm wondering if there is something that needs to be repaired/replaced inside the unit or if I need a whole new garage door opener? I'm not that familiar with them, so any advice would be helpful. I have an old, heavy, wooden 2 car garage door if that makes any difference.
A: if the motor runs when you activate the opener, the opener is doing its job. Your problem is going to lie in the door mechanism itself. The first thing i would check is the sensors on either side of the door to make sure they are not obstructed by any objects or they could be dirty. Also, if these sensors have come loose and are no longer aligned to see the door, they will not allow the door to open when they activate because they think there is an obstacle in the way.
Q: What is the best type of garage door opener: screw drive, belt drive or chain drive?
I am getting a garage door installed soon. I've decided upon the door, but can't figure out the best type of opener. What is the best type of garage door opener: screw drive, belt drive or chain drive?
What is it that makes one type better than another?
A: I have installed both a screw drive and a chain drive. As previously mentioned, a screw drive delivers more power. It may be required to open a double wide because of the extra weight or a single panel door that swings out and up because of the spring tension. If your motion sensors, stop switches and assist springs are installed and adjusted correctly, the additional torque should not be a concern. A belt drive is quieter but they have a tendency to slip and you should make sure your rollers are properly lubricated.
