Q: I was wondering how do I go about getting my garage door taken off and french doors put on.?
I have searched online I am a thrifty woman and I do a lot of handy work myself. I don't plan on selling the house and I want to be able to have a door instead of a garage and I want to run the AC/heat duct out to the garage (my brother can do that) just need me to buy the stuff. Any help would be nice.

A: You purchase the doors you want, remove the garage door & trim, frame in the hole except for the area you want the door, put siding on the outside that matches the house, insulate the wall, put drywall on the inside, install the new french doors and paint.

Q: How much is a fair installation price on french doors, and also on a 2 car garage door(non electrical)?
I'm doing a general door upgrade...

A: The base price for the lowest end (no insulation and no glass) for a 16x7 garage door, is about $550 installed.

Q: how can i stop rust on garage door or metal front door?
my garage door has just a few rust spots on inside of door. but my french door and front door (I believe are metal) ? are rusting up from the bottom. Any way to save or at least stop the rust from going further . What causes this rust ?

A: they sell a spray product called rust ender...try that it will stop it and then you can paint over it

Q: Need a reasonable handy man who can take down my garage door?
Need a reasonabile handy man who can take down my garage door and put up windows and french doors in PLACE OF THE garage door....it seems like a simple project, I will use a window unit for air and Ill lay indoor out door carpet..i wanted to suprise my husband for his 40th b day with a pool table in our new room..Any Ideas what that would cost and any real contractors who need the work???????

A: Great idea! I can do the windows for you and I have a friend who can do all the other small jobs for you.

Q: How can I brick-up a garage door?
Hiya~ I want to turn my free-standing garage into an office. It is a stucco garage. I would like to put French doors where the garage door (the one for the car) is, and close up the extra space around the doors, and also close up the current single-door opening (the one to walk through). I was thinking cinder blocks and mortar, followed by a stucco patch coating on the outside. How does that sound? Let me be clear that I have both no idea what I am doing, and confidence that I can figure out anything. This is a bad combination sometimes ;) The floor of the garage is what I would describe as polished concrete. I don't believe it is perfectly level; I live in earthquake country. I would like to avoid air gaps. After the doorways are sealed, I would like to stud, insulate, and drywall, and not have the drywall get wet from the bottom up. The roof is in perfect shape. Thanks! chaddie My father also suggested the chicken wire. He said something about roofing material that the chicken wire goes onto? The framing for the outside, can that also be use for the drywall inside, or do I need double? Thanks!

A: Brick it up? You should be able to just use some 2X4 framing, chicken wire, paper, stucco, insulation, and drywall. Sounds like more trouble, but trust me, laying brick is no laughing matter. Framing up for dyrwall and stucco is a cake walk compared to brick.

Q: How much does it cost to build a single garage with a pitch roof?
I want to build a single garage, double skin with a pitch roof in recon brick to match our house, how much would this cost approx? Also we have an integral double garage we want converted into a living room, it is already insulated but would need one big window bricked up, one new one put in in place of double garage doors and french patio doors, all would need plastering etc. Any help? I am in the UK, I am not sure about the roof as we have only just started to think about it.

A: Single detach, 7'x7' door, window and rear door £10k. £15k + for garage conversion.

Q: Do you prefer a garage or family room?
we have a built in finished garage, to turn it into a family room we would need to put in a wall of windows where door is currently with a brick planting box under to match the rest of the house facade(we found the right ones at a masonry place) and put flooring in, a ceiling fan remove door and track and touch up ceiling add trim to make it look pretty and put in a french door to what will be a rose garden with trellis fencing, we will not be putting in the new garage for at least 2 years though we will qualify for the home equity line next year, we would eventually open up the basement stairwell between it and the living room, once the basement is finished(this winter and spring) the vents will be easy to run for heat and a/c and the furnace is big enough to add that space, what do you think? should we wait to do all this till we have the new garage in? Our car is older anyways and doesnt need protection and we wont buy the new one till a year or so after garage is built? I should add, we have a 3 bedroom 960 sq ft ranch, and are putting a bedroom, den, toy area/ game room in the basement right now also a laundry/bathroom(we didnt plan out rooms the studwork was mostly done when we moved in) our garage is a single stall and will add 250 or so sq ft to house, basement is 960 but we lose a bit with studwork so say 700 or thereabouts is that too much? I wanted the garage so we could do a builtin electric fireplace and have a room just for the christmas tree crazy I know and for birthday parties and things we were planning on doing it next fall or summer or so, I didnt want to do to much work in there (repainting, replacing doors etc) if people thought it was a bad idea to make it a family room the ceilings are 11 foot tall in there isnt that awesome(the ceiling goes straight across) we live in iowa so yes but it starts fine and the drive is right next to a covered front porch for loading of kiddos. we do not do vehicle maintenance

A: I would definitely go for the finishing the family room. THe car is older, you said, so weather isn`t going to hurt it. Several things to consider, though. Do you or you husband do your own auto. maintenance? Do you use the garage for tool storage/ storage/ work area.?You will be losing this. Do you live in a cold area? Starting the car outside in the winter is also a factor, etc. Do you live in a good area/neighborhood? Will you be safe starting the car in the dark by yourself? If these things don`t present a problem, then go for it . Living space is always utilized more effectively than garage space.

Q: Dog door Installation?
I have double full glass french doors as my back door. How do I go about installing a dog door in this case? I could put one in my door going into the garage, but there is no way out of the garage.

A: Dog doors don't need to be in a door. You can cut a hole in the wall of your house. We have a doggie door cut into the front of our house. My boss has a million dollar home and he has a doggie door cut into his family room wall. You have options

Q: This is a UK Planning Permission query. I have planning for a garage conversion with a new pitched roof.?
There are two windows and some french doors on the approved plans. I have since decided that I don't want that many windows. If I left out one of the windows, which would mean leaving the existing wall unchanged, can I be forced to put it in?

A: You won't be forced to change it. The purpose of your submission plans is to highlight any changes to the main structure of the building. Since you decided to leave it out, it is advisable to update those plans so that the Council is informed.

Q: need info on painting a 1970's french colonial home with really ugly brick.?
I am attempting to paint my home. However, I have really ugly brick that is black and burnt sienna colored. The roof is done is tan and grey and the garage door and sun room are done to match the roof in a taupe color. I also have some aluminum trim and gutter work that are cream colored. I would like to add some shutters and paint the front door with an accent color, but I am at a loss as to what color to choose.

A: All of the colors you already have are neutral ones. So choose any color you like for the accents. In fact, the shutters could be done in one color, and the door in another. I just got through looking at a bunch of pictures showing French Colonial homes with brick and wood exteriors and with shutters. In each case, the shutters and door were painted different colors, and the effect was lovely. One had green shutters and a mustard-colored door; another had red shutters and a green door. What colors do you like? Choose something complementary from your own tastes.

Q: Is my fully finished basement considered above grade or below grade?
My fully finished basement and full bathroom is level to the ground (not below any part of the ground as my main living room level is actually the second story). One can walk out the french doors to my backyard's ground level patio area. I have a garage which is ground level as well. I can walk into the house from my garage, through the hallway, pass the utility room and open the door to my basement. If possible please provide a website that has this information written out. Thanks!

A: Above grade

Q: Can you please translate this phrase into french?
In the garage, there is a door which leads to a room. I know that its something like Dans le garage, il ya une porte qui (and i'm stuck there) Please don't use google translator because it doesn't exactly give the most accurate translations

A: Dans le garage, il y a une porte qui mène à une pièce. OR Dans le garage, il y a une porte qui donne accès à une pièce. ma chambre = my bedroom une pièce = a room, any room une chambre = a bedroom Note that "il y a" are three words, not two.

Q: I have a sump pump that is outside, what can I do to make sure it doesn't freeze up?
I live in Kansas and the weather will be getting cold. The pump is outside in a spot that slopes toward the house. My house is a bungalow and the garage used to be in the basement. Now the basement is finished and there are french doors where a garage door once was. There is currently a garden house attached to the sump pump, which worked fine this summer and fall but will surely freeze soon. I cannot bury the line because the area where the hose goes out of the pump is asphalted, since it used to be a drive way. Ahh, I didn't think about this all when I bought the house! Please help!

A: You can buy what they call heat tape that you wrap around the hose and plug in to an electric outlet to keep the hose from freezing. Most hardware stores should have this.

Q: Has your universal remote ever taken control of your neighbors appliances ?
Watch this, Mr. Evans garage door up, down, up, down. Now the McCoy's TV keeps switching to the French station. "Heh-heh-heh"!

A: No.

Q: How do you know if you have roaches?
We live in a city. We have lived here in this condo for 8yrs. We have the usual bugs/spiders...But-yesterday, my cat found a golden brown colored bug running across the living room floor. Of course I immediately think "god we have roaches". We do have a deck with french doors off our LR and this is where the bug ran from. (spiders etc seem to come from that direction also) I have never seen anything in the kitchen or bathrooms or our garage/basement. Our home is clean, but we do have a lot of stuff...We have outgrown our small condo. Actually we are moving and I have been cleaning and haven't seen any while doing that? Could one bug mean it's definitely a roach? No markings.....just a golden brown roach look-alike??? Help...

A: There are a lot of bugs that look kinda like roaches that are brown and around the same size... look up a picture of a roach and double check that that was what you killed. Just seeing one roach or bug doesnt necessarily mean you are infested just yet. Put out some bait, and hopefully you should be ok.
